Star of the Week!

We will be starting Star of the Week in September.  Your child will be coming home with a poster one week before their date.  Please help them fill out the poster if need be.  They are allowed to bring something to share each day.  No animals however are allowed for sharing.  Their poster will be hung in our room the entire week, and returned home the following Friday.  To make it fare, I have not scheduled anybody on a week where we have a day or two off.

Raz-Kids

Your child has their own Raz-Kids account, which they can use at school and at home. Their username and password cards were sent home on Sept. 26. Parents can also register and see how their child is performing!

To help your child be a stronger reader, please have them listen to the story once, read aloud the second time and then reread the third time. If they have a microphone on their computer, they can also record their reading so I can listen to them (I LOVE that!). Afterwards, they can take their quiz and see how they do. They may need to read the story again to move onto the next book. Happy Reading!

Thank you PTA!

I would love to take a minute and acknowledge all the amazing ways our PTA supports me in my classroom and at LP.

Did you know PTA pays for...

  • All classroom and office supplies every year
  • PTA also covers staff training and staff development
  • Learning tools such as magazine subscriptions
  • Grade level teaching material
  • Supplemental teachers get the material they need such as computer lab subscriptions, art supplies and PE equipment.

But that's not all - they host fun events like...

  • Read-a-thon
  • Mother/son Dodgeball,
  • Movie nights
  • Fall carnival
  • Father/daughter dance

THANK YOU PTA!

Common Core Math ROCKS!

Dear Parents,

Many of you may be wondering what the new common core math looks like in second grade. Well, it's a lot different than when we were their age!

Instead of memorizing fact families, kids are now introduced to multiples way to solve a problem. They not only need to solve the problem, but also be able to explain their thinking using pictures.

Since my "mathematicians" have been rocking math these days, I thought it would be fun to show parents some of the strategies they have learned to solve equations.

I hope you enjoy them!

Special Reminder for Current 2nd Grade Parents! 3rd Grade All Early  Start Time in Fall!

All Moraga School District 3rd grade students will again follow an 8:25 AM to 1:55 PM instructional schedule the first three weeks of school, August 21 through September 8. Starting Monday, September 11, all 3rd grade students will begin the full-day schedule of 8:25 AM - 3:05 PM (1:50 PM on Wednesdays).

The three week early release period provides third grade teachers time to individually assess their student's reading and math levels to group students for instruction, evaluate a student's reading accuracy level, comprehension, and fluency, select texts that will be productive for instruction, and identify students who may be eligible for additional support.

READER'S/WRITER'S WORKSHOP

We loved diving into non-fiction reading and writing but now we're hopping back into the creative world of fiction. We will be learning to developing opinions about the characters we are reading about and backing up our thinking with evidence. We'll be writing letters to peers and creating awards for characters we love. Oh what fun reading and writing will be this month!

Skip Counting By 2's!

This second grade class is full of mathematicians this year! We have been learning equations by using a math mountain, horizontal equation and vertical equations. On this day, we learned about even and odd numbers. Even numbers come in "pairs" and odd number do not have a partner. They also create word problems to go along with number equations and can show their thinking by using pictures, tally marks, fingers and mental math.
