Fifth Grade

Activities

Keyboarding – Students devote part of computer lab working on finger placement, accuracy, and speed with the website, Typing Club. This program empahsizes touch typing and provides reports on the individual's progress. Students are also taught proper ergonomics when using the computer.

"All About Me" Word Cloud - Students used the website Tagul.com to create a word list describing themselves and then created word clouds – amazing pictures made up of the words in the list. Students learned to customize their project by formatting the layout, font size, and color of the word cloud.

Cyber Security, Cyberbullying, Cell Phone and Video Sharing Rules, and Password and Email Rules Public Service Announcements (PSAs) - Fifth graders collaborated in groups to research these topics, write video scripts, and shoot short videos with an iPad. Videos were shot in front of a green screen backdrop and students combined the video with various backgrounds in the iPad app, Do Ink Green Screen, to create a finished project that made them appear to be in locations other than the classroom. Students then edited the videos in iMovie and produced Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about their topics. These will be available to view on the lab website

Google Docs - Students learn how to use Google Docs for classroom and computer lab assignments.

Blogging - Students learned the rules and etiquette for blogging by using KidBlog.com, which provided a safe environment in which the blogs are only visible to their classmates. Topics varied from those introduced by the computer instructor as well as those suggested by students.

Computer Coding – Students started computer coding on Code.org in November and worked at their own pace through the 20-hour coding Course 3 during computer lab. They learned to assembled a series of blockly commands into a simple program to move characters through a maze, perform a series of tasks, or draw geometric designs and pictures. During the week of December 5-11,  students will participate in the worldwide Hour of Code event and worked on special activities on the Code.org website.

Digital Citizenship

Students watched videos and participated in discussions about information privacy, rings of responsibility (levels of responsibility to yourself, your family and friends, and your community), and cyberbullying. Students also collaborated on and shared Public Service Announcements Videos about Cyber Security, Cyberbullying, Cell Phone and Video Sharing Rules, and Password and Email Rules.
